The US government establish a Fort on the high ground above the spring, south of the road in the 1850's. The springs of Las Moras have seen visitors for a millennia before the Spanish came, and the site has been in continuous use for perhaps the past 12,000 years. By the late 1870's Fort Clark had grown to become the largest military installation in Texas.
Such officers as Major General Ranald S. McKenzie, Major General Wesley Merritt, Major General William R. Shafter, General Philip H. Sheridan, General William Tecumseh Sherman, Major General Zenus R. Bliss, Major General Abner Doubleday, Captain William H. Sage, General J.M Wainwright and Patton have served on Fort Clark, along with the Medal of honor recipients buried a short distance from the fort. The different cavalry divisions that have served here are the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 9th, 12th, 18, 55th, to name a few, along with the famous Buffalo soldiers.
Many of the old fort buildings are still in use today and we have one of the most intact Historic districts in the US today.
